Netflix’s TV animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham will finally arrive on the streaming service later this year. The series, which is based on the classic children’s book, was announced nearly four years ago in April of 2015. Ellen DeGeneres, who’s regarded the project as “cutting-edge animation” that’s never been done before, will serve as executive producer on the show, and it’ll feature 13 episodes based on Seuss’ popular book.
Green Eggs and Ham will center on a cross country trip between Guy and the character of Sam-I-Am. The two are out looking to rescue an endangered animal from a far-off zoo. Along the way, the two opposite characters will learn to try new things like a certain green-tinged dish. The series is said to be one of Netflix’s two “bigger bets” for the streaming services kids and family programming. Green Eggs and Ham will feature the voice talents of Diane Keaton, Eddie Izzard, Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, Adam Devine, Michael Douglas, Daveed Diggs, and many more. Recently, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos made the series launch announcement during the company’s earnings interview.
Per Variety, Netflix’s Green Eggs and Ham animated TV series will premiere later this year on the service. Sarandos has called the adaptation a “very ambitious 13-episode animated original series with feature-quality animation.” No specific release date was announced, but the series will arrive sometime during the last few months of the year and an arrival date should be announced soon.
Netflix has several major projects set to arrive in the coming months, such as the highly anticipated third season of Stranger Things, which releases in July. Next month, the service’s Ted Bundy selection grows when the biopic based on the notorious killer Extremely Wicked, Shocking Evil and Vile is added to its original film library. Green Eggs and Ham should be a welcomed fit for the kids’ lineup on Netflix when it arrives later this year. And, since the series announcement back in 2015, the streaming juggernaut has only grown in popularity. So the addition of a show based on a hit childhood story should only draw in more subscribers. The children’s book has appeared in several adaptations, beginning in the early 1970s with Dr. Seuss on the Loose. Whether or not Netflix’s adaptation does the source material justice will be decided when it premieres later this year.
While the series is targeting children, several adults may want to check out the animated series as well. There will certainly be a bit of nostalgia for those who grew up reading the book numerous times. After being in the works for several years the show will finally be available to stream in the coming months. Hopefully, Netflix’s children programming gets more exciting once Green Eggs and Ham arrives later this year.
