BioWare is still years away from publishing Dragon Age 4. This comes after the company teased that it would announce something about the Dragon Age franchise this month.
BioWare released the first game in the series, Dragon Age: Origins, in 2009. That title introduced the world to the fictional kingdom of Ferelden, where Grey Wardens get called up to duty to defeat the evil known as the Darkspawn. The action-adventure RPG offered choices throughout gameplay, which determined the outcome of the game. The follow-up title, Dragon Age II, released in 2011 and furthered the story, taking players to the realm of Thedas to take on the role of a refugee from events of the first game. In that title, the mages rebelled, which led to the third game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, released in 2014. In Inquisition, the player becomes the Inquisitor, a person tasked with settling the unrest in Thedas as well as dealing with a mysterious Breach in the sky that has unleashed demons into the world.
All three Dragon Age games remain popular with players, many of whom are anxiously awaiting an announcement of a fourth game. And although that announcement might come soon, VentureBeat reports that the game itself is at least still three years away from release. BioWare and EA still have no idea what the title of the new game is. BioWare has focused so much of its efforts on its upcoming MMORPG Anthem that EA pushed a new Dragon Age project aside while BioWare worked on Anthem. The good news is that there will be a Dragon Age 4, but the development of that project is still in its early stages.
Last month, BioWare teased on its blog that it would make an announcement this month about Dragon Age, though. With The Game Awards 2018 coming up this week, it’s probably a safe bet to expect the official announcement to happen during that event. That announcement may be no more than a title reveal (given that they decide on one) or a mention that the studio has officially committed to developing the next Dragon Age game.
BioWare understands that Dragon Age has a dedicated fanbase, so although the next title in the franchise is still far out, the studio will likely reveal something about it soon to keep those fans happy. Most fans will find satisfaction in just having Dragon Age 4 confirmed, although three years is a long time to wait to find out what happens next in the kingdoms of Thedas and Ferelden.
