Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball FighterZ has already hit another landmark by selling 2.5 million copies, thus making it the 4th best-selling game in the franchise. Released in January and developed by Arc System Works, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 2.5D fighting game that allows players to assemble teams of their favorite characters for three-on-three tag battles, in the style of the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise.
Unlike past installments in the series, Dragon Ball FighterZ features an original story. Players are able to play as fan-favorite characters from the anime, including Goku and Vegeta, as well as new characters that were introduced in Dragon Ball Super, such as Hit and Goku Black. The game is currently available on the Playstation 4, the Xbox One, and the PC via Steam - and releasing on all those platforms has helped boost its overall sales numbers.
According to Bandai Namco, Dragon Ball FighterZ has already sold an impressive 2.5 million copies as of March 31st. This includes both physical and digital sales. Having launched at the end of January, FighterZ has only been available for three full months. A week after it release, Bandai Namco announced that the game had already sold 2 million copies. That alone was a milestone, as it made FighterZ the franchise’s fastest-selling title. Then, FighterZ sold an additional 500,000 copies in February and March, thereby solidifying the game as an astounding success.
The game has already become the franchise’s 4th best-selling title, which is a major accomplishment considering that over 40 Dragon Ball games have released since 1986. Based on Bandai Namco’s financials from previous years, 2015’s Dragon Ball Xenoverse is the top-selling Dragon Ball game of all-time, with an estimated 5 million sales having been sold in total. The second game on the list is Dragon Ball: Budokai, which sold 3.5 million units, followed by Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 at 3.4 million.
Dragon Ball FighterZ may continue to climb the charts, as Bandai Namco isn’t far from finished with releasing content for the game, and that could encourage more fans to pick it up in the coming months. The first season of DLC for the game adds eight characters to the roster, which already boasts 24 fighters. Bardock and Broly have already been added, and Super Saiyan Blue Vegito and Fused Zamasu will be released soon.
