CMON Games has announced a new tabletop game based on Dragon Ball Z, slated for release in 2020. The announcement comes as part of CMON’s larger presence at San Diego Comic Con this year.
CMON (formerly CoolMiniOrNot) has been developing and publishing a variety of tabletop games for years, after starting out as a community site in 2001. Many of these projects have been funded through Kickstarter, and have regularly exceeded their funding goals thanks to a number of dedicated backers. CMON has notably partnered with other major publishers to create tabletop adaptations of properties like Game of Thrones, Kick-Ass, Narcos, and the upcoming Bloodborne tabletop game.
CMON will be adding yet another big IP to that list soon. In a short post on Facebook, the company revealed that it will be partnering with IDW Games and Toei Animation to create a tabletop game based on Dragon Ball Z. Entitled Dragon Ball Z Miniature Mayhem, CMON has described it as a “fast-paced, dice-driven battle royale”. The game doesn’t have a concrete release date as of yet, but will be arriving some time in 2020.
Details are very limited so far, but given the title of the game, it’s safe to assume that it will involve mini-figures (which may or may not be customizable). CMON says that players will be able to create their dream “what if” scenarios, pitting the iconic heroes and villains of the series against each other however they please. In true Dragon Ball fashion, the tabletop game will revolve around the series’ recurring characters facing off in order to determine who is the strongest fighter in the universe.
In the past few years, it has been interesting to see Dragon Ball make such a huge return to popularity. Dragon Ball Super gave longtime fans the homecoming that they wanted and also drew in a new generation of viewers. Dragon Ball FighterZ became the Dragon Ball fighting game that the fighting game community had been hoping for for years, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly quickly became one of the top-grossing anime films of all time.
Of course, all this has inspired a new era of Dragon Ball merchandise and games, and Dragon Ball Z Miniature Mayhem is just the latest example. There are obviously a lot of questions still to be answered about this tabletop game, but perhaps the most important is “which characters will be in it?” The title clearly says Dragon Ball Z, which may imply that only characters from the Z saga will be included.
