Nostalgia works in cycles. Almost every generation looks back to their childhood with fondness and then tries to recreate that experience for the next generation. We have seen this phenomenon in a wide range of film and TV shows recently, whether it’s Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or the upcoming reboot of Power Rangers. However, that isn’t the only property coming back to assault pop culture in the near future.
Disney is preparing to relaunch their popular 1980s cartoon, DuckTales, in a brand new series next year on Disney XD. The original series centered around Scrooge McDuck, who first came to fame with his appearances in animated shorts starring Donald Duck. The character was inspired by A Christmas Carol’s Ebenezer Scrooge and had a notable presence all over the world of Disney, until his popularity shot through the roof with DuckTales in 1987.
The animated series followed the escapades of McDuck and his globe-trotting adventures with his grandnephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, along with their ace pilot, Launchpad McQuack. The series is being brought back to television next year in a brand new animated show and today we got our first look at the updated logo.
The “new” logo, which comes courtesy of Oh My Disney is a near recreation of the original, which is sure to trigger nostalgia in parents eager to share the new adventures with their own kids. As OMD remarks, the logo vivid logo certainly has a modern flare to its design, while also honoring the comic books from Carl Barks.
Despite the logo staying relatively the same, it’s definitely in contrast to the bold decision to change the animation style of the new show. The original show’s animation reflected Disney’s traditional hand-drawn style of the 80s and 90s. While many may have assumed that the new show would come back as a full-fledged CGI production. However, early stills show an animation style that is a throwback to the era of newspaper comic strips.
There is huge potential in the DuckTales franchise, which was evidenced as recently last week when series creator Tad Stones debunked the theory that DuckTales and Darkwing Duck existed in the same universe. The announcement triggered an internet debate and seemingly proved that there still is plenty of viability and fan interest in the DuckTales property. So get ready, as the wacky ducks of Disney will be back again in full force next year.
DuckTales will premiere on Disney XD in 2017.
