Netflix releases the trailer for Dumplin’, the streaming service’s upcoming movie adaptation of Julie Murphy’s same-named young adult novel. Netflix has found a great deal of success in 2018 with its YA adaptations, first with The Kissing Booth, then over the summer with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. In fact, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before received so many views, it became a veritable hit for the streaming service (leading many fans to ask when a To All the Boys sequel will arrive). For now, subscribers enjoying Netflix’s romantic comedy and YA adaptation releases can look forward to Dumplin'.
Netflix acquired Dumplin’ earlier this year - with the deal being announced not too long after To All the Boys was released on the streaming service - with a late 2018 premiere expected. Now, following the release of first look photos from Dumplin’, which arrived alongside a poster that confirmed the movie’s early December release date, Netflix has unveiled the film’s first trailer.
Netflix released the first Dumplin’ movie trailer, which can be viewed below. Based on Murphy’s novel of the same name, Dumplin’ follows Willowdean Dickson (Danielle Macdonald), the daughter of local beauty queen Rosie Dickson (Jennifer Aniston). The story sees Willowdean sign up for the beauty pageant run by her mother in order to prove something to herself - but she accidentally winds up leading a revolution of sorts against typical beauty standards when other atypical pageant contestants follow Will’s lead and sign up.
Macdonald and Aniston are joined in Dumplin’ by Odeya Rush as Will’s best friend Ellen, Luke Benward as Will’s love interest Bo, Bex Taylor-Klaus and Maddie Baillio as two of Will’s fellow pageant contestants Hannah and Millie, and Dove Cameron as Bekah Cotter, the pageant contestant favored to win. The movie will feature new and re-recorded songs from Dolly Parton, whose music is integral to Willowdean’s journey as well as her relationship with her best friend. Dumplin’ was directed by Anne Fletcher from a script by Kristin Hahn.
Based on the trailer and those involved in producing the movie (Aniston is also on board as a producer), Dumplin’ looks like it could be another solid release for Netflix. It seems to stick fairly close to Murphy’s novel while formatting the story for a two-hour film. As a result, it should please both book fans and newcomers alike. Considering Netflix’s track record in 2018 with its YA adaptations, Dumplin’ may be another hit for the streaming service. Of course, whether it reaches the heights of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before remains to be seen. But the trailer for Dumplin’ does tease a compelling coming of age story, with some romantic comedy elements, that will no doubt appeal to Netflix subscribers young and old.
