Dwayne Johnson’s Interpol action film Red Notice, which may co-star Gal Gadot, could begin filming as early as next January. There’s no busier actor in Hollywood right now than Johnson. And there is arguably no more bankable actor at the present time either.
Coming off his latest hit Rampage, Johnson will go all-out with action again this summer, starring in the towering disaster movie Skyscraper (whose spectacularly improbable artwork already caused a bit of a stir). Presently, the star is hard at work on Jungle Cruise, based on the Disneyland ride and co-starring Emily Blunt. In September, Johnson will kick back into Fast and the Furious mode to begin work on the spinoff movie built around the characters of Hobbs and Shaw, directed by David Leitch and co-starring Jason Statham.
After Hobbs and Shaw, Johnson will move on to Red Notice, a project that will reportedly pay the actor over $20 million. As reported by Omega Underground, work could get underway on Red Notice as early as January. Previous reports said Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is being eyed as the female lead opposite Johnson. Landing Gadot would give Red Notice some serious star power indeed.
Details on Red Notice - beyond its slated 2020 release date - remain scarce, with little offered beyond the synopsis: “An Interpol agent tracks the world’s most wanted art thief.” Johnson plays the Interpol man, while details on Gal Gadot’s potential role remain under wraps. It’s possible Gadot could be the one Legendary has in mind to play the art thief Johnson is trying to track down, turning the movie into a male-female battle-of-wits. That obviously would be a change-of-pace for Johnson, whose movies tend to emphasize broad action over cat-and-mouse dynamics. Though typical Johnson-sized action set pieces will surely figure in the film too.
Red Notice reunites Johnson with director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who also directed him in Skyscraper and Central Intelligence. With the movie slated to begin as early as January, that means Johnson won’t be able to begin work on that promised Jumanji sequel until sometime later in 2019, with Sony looking at a Christmas ‘19 release. By that time, Johnson will likely have announced his next six projects after that. Clearly, Johnson and his team believe in striking while the iron is hot. But is there a danger of Dwayne Johnson fatigue setting in?
Thus far, Johnson’s fans have shown little sign that they’re getting sick of him. Of course he has had a few duds in recent years, most notably Baywatch. And Rampage, though a decent hit worldwide, was perhaps a little soft in its domestic box office with $95 million in ticket sales. Otherwise, Johnson just keeps on cranking out hits, including last year’s surprise blockbuster Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
Red Notice is scheduled for release on June 12, 2020.
